Lovely reviews about our guests stay during a creative writing retreat at Chateau Fengari
When I was a pre-teen in the early 1970s, I remember my mom listening to the album of Camelot as she cleaned the house (something I did too later in life).
The album was from the 1967 film featuring Richard Harris and Vanessa Redgrave. One of the songs describes a happily-ever-after moment of an enchanting place called Camelot where life is just about perfect.
The song reminds me of what my life was like the past three weeks at Chateau Fengari in the charming village of Clerac, France.
It seemed like a fairytale that 13 women would join me and @jocarnegie1 to write their books at a private chateau. Part of the allure of the chateau is sharing it with the family who owns it along with their children and animals, including a baby goat named Bianca.
As the writers continue to work on their books, I hope they remember the happily-ever-after moments we experienced at this special sanctuary in France - for a few weeks it was my version of Camelot.
Next year the Master Your Memoir Writing Intensive is ten days. You'll need to submit a first chapter so we know you are ready to write. Dates and details soon.

Reviews from the Qoya retreat of 2017
This in an exquisite property with exceptional hosts. It is the perfect spot for reflection, taking you out of your everyday world so that you can restore, dream and create. Alex and Karolina not only invite you into their Chateau, but into their life and home.
I recently hosted two Qoya Writing Retreats at Chateau de Clerac. In the past five years, I've been on 20+ retreats around the world - the chateau may be the best place I've experienced for a movement and writing retreat.
We knew we were coming to dance and write our stories. What I didn't know is the impact our stay at Chateau de Clerac would have not just on our writing but on our souls.
Alex & Karolina, our hosts for the week, have a gift for bringing old things back to life. Their inspiration certainly guided us this week as we looked at our old stories with a new appreciation, even the ones that were so hard to tell our voices shook when we spoke them. And we also saw the difference of how Alex & Karolina opened spaces at the chateau, tearing down 100 year old decaying walls to create something even better. And we did the same with our stories.
Before I came on this retreat, I wrote that I like to write in the places where I pray the best. Chateau de Clerac is that place.
It’s been a few days since I returned to NYC from the Chateau Fengari. Though a bit jet lagged, what I feel the most is a longing to return to a place so magical and with people so warm and caring that I felt as though I was living a real life fairy tale.
The Chateau is like a splendid castle from a bygone era. Alex, Karolina, their lovely kids and incredible staff take great care of you. And the food…
I could go on and on about Jo-Jo’s out of this world culinary skills; each dish delectable and infused with love.
Quite simply, I have never had such a stay anywhere and I have travelled extensively.
Chateau Fengari is the perfect amalgam of luxury, simple elegance, refinement, and authenticity topped off by an atmosphere of creativity, joy and generous spirit.
The perfect place to rest and relax, have an adventure or engage in a creative pursuit.
I cannot wait to return.
